Early Years in Sulphur and Dayton
Betty Joe Lloyd Vaughn was born on September 24, 1951, in Sulphur, Louisiana, to Joseph Robinson Jr. and Betty Lou Edwards Robinson Johnson. Her early life was rooted in family, with the presence of her mother and father forming the beginning of a household that would remain an important part of her story.
As a young girl, she came from a family whose ties extended across generations, including grandparents and great-grandparents whose names remained part of the family’s memory. She also grew up among siblings, including her sister Joanne Robinson Robins and her brother Allen Wayne Robinson Sr. In such surroundings, family was not an abstract idea but a living presence — people known by name, connected by care, history, and belonging.
Betty attended Dayton High School, where her school years formed part of the foundation of her early life. Though few details remain about those days, they mark the beginning of the path she would later follow with steadiness and purpose.
One of the early influences that can be seen in her life was music and faith within her family circle. She later sang with The Family Spirituals alongside her mother, sister, cousins, and best friend Karen Singleton, suggesting that these bonds of worship, song, and kinship were meaningful to her from an early time. In this closeness, her first interests were shaped not by solitude, but by shared voices, family presence, and a community of faith.
